Artist's Comments

I was reluctant to post this pic on DA as I thought the quality was lacking.
DA Aidan, *Wodewose, kind of insisted that I do it.

Well, here it is Aidan, after that Anglo Saxon expression you used, you convinced
me.

I captured this pic from Sunset Beach on Sunday night 10 April 2005 at 20h28. A freak storm of note had
hit Cape Town, conditions were so appalling that the use of my tripod was
impossible, hence the poor quality pic.

If you refer to my earlier submission, Table Mountain at Night, you’ll see the flood
lights lighting up the mountain. These same flood lights can be seen in this storm
pic just below the cloud covering Table Mountain. There are 5 flood lights visible.
This cloud cover, referred to locally as the Cape Doctor, usually occurs in our spring
& summer months, September through to January, brought about by the South East
wind. The North Westerly is normally our rain & storm bearing prevailing winter wind .

I forwarded this pic to our local newspapers and radio station KFM 94,5. DJ Nic
Marais of KFM, posted the pic on their website [link]
he obviously thought it was good enough as well.
Thanks Nic
Thanks Aidan

Glad you posted it: thank you :-)
I still can't believe you weren't absolutely thrilled with it in the first place. It is quite simply the best and most dramatic weather pic I have ever seen. I've seen a lot - and I mean a lot of photos on dA since I joined, including a high number of very good ones, but nothing better than this.
Now I need to look into how you go about recommending something for Deviation of the Day.

There's a few technical things that make it not that great a photo, but WOW. It is pretty amazing content!

Thanks David, now you can see why I was reluctant to post it...............

No matter how many times I see it, the fact that we manage to stop time for that brief moment in time and capture something as awe inspiring as lightning, nature's most visual and powerful symbol of power, is something I feel we can all be happy about.

Well done!

This is an amazing shot :!:
Look at that sky ! Those cloud ! :omg:
...And you were able to capture lightnings!!!! :omfg:

...I would be curious to know what are those "technical things" that are (supposed to be) "wrong" ^^;
:iconwolfskin:
With content like this, I think it's still good that you posted it - maybe it's not technically great, but there's a raw "wow" factor to the whole thing. That you were able to get a shot like that *at all* was fantastic!
:icondensitometer:
Thank you David for those kind words.................

Thank you Demie, for one, its, out of focus having not being able to use my tripod because of the high winds.

I was lucky to get this result hand holding my camera..................

If you have a look at may other night shots in my gallery, you'll see wat I mean. They are Table Mountain at Night, Cape Town Harbour at Night and Cape Town at Night............
